London Marathon framing aside the modern London Marathon isn’t the first long distance race hosted by the capital. But it is the most famous. Founded by a journalist and athlete, Chris Brasher and John Disley respectively.
Until recently each Spring nearly every year since 1981 the BBC TV morning schedule has been dominated by the event. And the only year since its introduction in 1981 that it hasn’t been held is 2021. Due to the Covid pandemic.
In recent years the event was in fact moved to October, and over the years the route has varied very slightly too. But always 26.2 miles, the standard Marathon distance.
The pageantry and size of the race has seen rapid growth in recent years. With celebrity starters, celebrity participants worldwide TV coverage. And an ever-growing number of runners racing in wacky and outrageous costumes.
In 2006 the elite race even became an official part of the World Marathon Majors.
Millions of runners have participated over the years. And now the event has grown to hundreds of thousands each race. In part due to the charity aspect of the race. Each year the race focuses on a worthwhile cause to promote. But charity runners in the open race may also run on behalf of any registered charity close to their hearts.
The event now raises tens of millions for charity each year. Despite the mass participation completion of the gruelling 26.2 miles, for charity or not is still a huge achievement.
